Ashwick Parish Council News

The Great British Spring Clean Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th March 2017

Ashwick Parish Council have registered for the new Great British Spring Clean, with a view to it becoming an annual event helping to bring people together and clean up the country.  Food packaging, plastic bottles, takeaway meals containers and cigarette butts have all contributed to a growing menace that affects our wildlife, streets, countryside and sense of pride, as well as having a detrimental effect on our environment.

The Parish Council is appealing for volunteers to participate in its own ‘Spring Clean’ on Saturday, 4th March between 10 am and 2 pm, commencing at the Village Hall at 9.45 am.  Hi-vis jackets, rubbish sacks and litter grabbers will be supplied, but please bring your own gloves.  Routes will be advised on the day plus any additional information relating to Health & Safety.  Refreshments for volunteers will be provided in the Village Hall.

If you would like to support this Campaign please contact Lizzie Lewis  on 01749-840828 or email [email protected]

Killer Dog(s)

I regret to report that there has been another dog attack on livestock in the Nettlebridge area, resulting in the death of 2 ewes.   This is the second incident in the same area this year so the dog (or dogs) responsible must be local.

Dog owners should be aware that farmers have the right to shoot any animal found 'worrying' livestock:   dog owners should keep their animals on a lead when using public footpaths on private fields and not let them run loose, irrespective of whether or not livestock are in the field.

It is possible that the dog(s) involved in the Nettlebridge attacks got out from their homes without the owners being aware, but I personally feel the dog's owner must have an idea of what has happened due to blood etc. on the dog when it returned.

I do not want to have to shoot any dog, so will dog owners please take note.

Francesca Palmer,
Practice Manager,
Oakhill Surgery.

We are pleased to announce that the practice is undergoing work for an extension to the current building and car park. The building work will take approximately 4 months to complete but once finished the practice will benefit from:

-          An interview room
-          A lift to the upstairs consultation room
-          An additional 10 spaces added to the current car park

We are confident that our patients will see the benefits to this work which will make it more convenient for patients and also allows us to look at expanding the services we offer to our patients.

We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or noise disturbance caused when visiting the practice and we are grateful for your ongoing support throughout the building work. We will keep all patients informed throughout the build of any changes or disruption to services. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Ashwick and Oakhill have a surprising variety of local businesses, from someone who can fix your computer, garden design and tree felling, alternative therapies, to butchers and chefs, and no doubt many more.   So why not check out if a local service could meet your needs?

The latest addition to the list is 'Cornelius', a bespoke metalworking business, run by local second generation craftsman, Zak Bolton.  Zak offers a complete range of traditional, hand-crafted metalwork, from iron gates and railings, to weather vanes and chandeliers!   In addition, if you want to have a go yourself, Zak offers the opportunity for you to try your hand at making something in iron, copper or brass, from a napkin ring to a garden trowel.

'Cornelius' will make items from your own designs or can they offer help.  For more information contact Zak on 07796 634510 or Bill on 01749-840366

We have had several enquiries over the past year regarding availability of our previous book publications, all of which sold out very quickly.   We are considering a small re-run of our book

‘Oakhill & Ashwick---some of our memories and old photographs’

This book was last published ten years ago in 2005, and comprised of 56 pages. We sold 500 copies then, so we are wondering how much interest there would be for a small reprint.
As the reprint would be of a small volume the price, should we go ahead, would be £10.

To give us an idea of the interest, please E-mail [email protected]  to log your interest, with your name and address.  If we obtain sufficient interest, we will publish and advise you accordingly.

Why not start the new year with a country walk. Mendip Ramblers are leading two walks from Oakhill on Sunday 18th of January. These walks are free and open to the community – you do not need to be a member of the ramblers. Both walks start from the village hall, The Recreation Ground, at the top of Zion Hill (BA35AN). The first walk starts at 10 am and is 7 miles. The second walk starts at 1.30 pm and is 4 miles. Join us for either or both walks. If you need more details call Les Stather on 07768556735
